The seasonal new year is here! And now we wait for the melt and then the mud.
Someone once asked, “What is spring in New England? There’s January, February, and Mud. When the mud dries, it’s summer again.”
But through the muddy mires, spring changes are swift and often happening right under our nose. After the never ending bearance of winter, by the time our eyes adjust to the longer light, some of the signs will have come and gone.
It is a wet world, thawing out cupfuls at a time, awash like Neptune, the fish of Pisces feel right at home. In the early days, every brook becomes a torrent, every puddle an ocean. The whispers of sunlight and air have a warm tinge. No green yet — it is far too soon, but the crimson of dogwood and the swell of red maple buds scribble over the brown.
In March, you have to go in search of spring. But as the months move forward, what lives on the fringes become the frame. Congregations of snow drops bow their heads in reverence. Daffodil blades slice through barren soil, and rogue crocuses arrive in twos & threes, not wanting to be late to the party.
Mud might be the bother of springtime hiking, but if you’re busy searching out the other spring signs, maybe you won’t even notice it. (Till you step right in it 😆).

What a sweet, sweet morning at @holidaybrookfarm 🍁
Today was a celebration of all things maple! Charlotte from @berkshirelandkeepers kicked things off with family-friendly hike under a big, blue sky. We did some fun maple activities, including flipping our own flapjacks 🥞 and Dicken showed us around the sugar shack! We even got to meet some emus! 🦖
Make sure you stop in for Holiday Farm’s delicious pancake breakfast! You can visit tomorrow (3/19) or next Saturday (3/25) from 8-1.
